Following the recommendation of the Howard Thurman Vision Committee, Boston University will expand programming in the Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground and move the center to a more spacious location, BU President Robert Brown announced Friday in an email to the BU community.
The committee, appointed by Brown in December 2015 and led by Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore and Dean of the School of Theology Mary Moore, submitted a final report of recommendations to Brown March 27.
The committee’s goal is to make the HTC an “interdisciplinary, interracial, interreligious, intersectional, and interpersonal hub where students can relate what they learn in the classroom to a broader quest for understanding, social progress, and peace,” the report stated.
The 37-page report recommends center become larger, more visible and more accessible to BU community.
“The Howard Thurman Center for Common Ground is a jewel in the crown of BU,” the report stated. “Thus, the potential to increase BU’s diversity, and its engagement with the gifts and challenges of diversity, will be increased by an expanded Thurman Center.”
The university’s goal is to begin the implementation of the expansion of the HTC’s programing and staffing by this fall, Brown wrote.
