Recently, I have been a witness to many students trashing B’G, blaming them for poor heating, electrical outages, faulty elevators, leaks, and generally everything that can possibly go wrong with a building. However, one thing I have never heard is a compliment for the men and women working to keep our buildings safe, clean, and operational. When students are whining, “The trash cans are too full and they need to be changed! The bathrooms are too dirty and they need to be cleaned!” they never took the time to really think about the cause of the problems. Lacking motivation to recycle or to keep the bathrooms clean themselves is the reason the problems arise. Some even act as if the problems should be corrected within an hour, without a need to report it to RHA or the B’G office. I have to say that I do not know many of the B’G workers personally, but those I do know are hard working individuals who care very much about how comfortable we are. I found that despite the power going out on occasion and the heat causing some problems, B’G went out of their way, staying much later than their shifts required them in order to get the problems solved. One night, the fans outside of my room (the fans above the west campus dining hall) were making obnoxious noises. I tolerated it for ten minutes and then was getting ready to go downstairs to report the problem but before I could, I heard B’G on the roof correcting the problem in weather I wouldn’t even face if I had to go to class! BU students, it is understandable that you are concerned with having working heat and electricity, and problems do occur… but before you attempt to place the blame, notice that we are living in older buildings and things do go wrong. Be patient because you aren’t the only ones with the problems. Late at night, the B’G crew is trying their best to keep up with the dozens of complaints that occur all over campus. I commend all of the workers at Boston University for putting up with us and am honored to know any of them, as they are fine examples of the hard workers that we should be (knowing that students don’t always work as hard as they can). Keep up the good work, B’G!
