The last time Liars played Boston, frontman Angus Young sped around the stage at Agganis Arena in an oversized Celtics jersey, raving about Boston sports whenever he wasn’t raving about whatever the hell he’s raving about in his songs. In an interview with the Muse last week, Young opened up with even more praise for Boston sports. It’s safe to say the band seems happy to be back in town for tomorrow night’s show at the Paradise Rock Club.
Liars is currently touring in support of its eponymous fourth album, which diverges from the ambient, experimental music of the band’s prior recordings in favor of more structured rock songs. Young said working with traditional songs structures was just as much of an experience though.
“When we get to the more traditional elements, they seem the most far-flung,” he explained. “But I think it’s important to keep ourselves tested — it —keeps us fresh. It’s been a really long and interesting process for us, still learning how to do things.”
With Liars, the band maintains its reverb-drenched, tribal drumbeats and still tends to devolve into characteristic waves of atonal bliss — but does so with a more refined approach, as if each song begins with a set destination instead of the aimless meandering that often pervades their earlier work.
“One thing we’d never tackled was a traditional song structure and a more, I guess, common approach to using instruments,” Young said. “We wanted to challenge ourselves with that, because it’s quite a weird thing for us. I think that we wanted to get back to a real simple way of music that’s more of a gut reaction than a cerebral one.”
And Young knows exactly what organ to target. The opening two songs on Liars feel like a one-two punch to the gut, a feeling typically replicated in the wild antics of the band’s live shows.
“It’s a visceral reaction present in us and also in the crowd,” Young said. “So, when we get out in front of an audience, it almost has less to do with any sort of foresight or acknowledgment of what could happen. I think that’s what’s exciting for the crowd — they’re dictating the vibe of the whole show rather than us telling them.”
Liars will perform at the Paradise Rock Club on Friday, February 8 at 8 p.m. with openers No Age.
