If “American Idol” fans expected Ms. McPhee to continue the trend of high-energy pop hits and powerful ballads she won praise for on the show, they’re in for a shock. On her self-titled debut album, Katherine goes for an R’B vibe and, unfortunately, her songs are less soulful than they are full of cliché lyrics and overdone, awkward background vocals. “Open Toes” is about, well, wearing open-toed shoes. Pointless. Some of the more poppy tunes, like “Love Story,” are catchy, but nothing to write home about. She begins to redeem herself with the slower songs “Ordinary World” and “Better Off Alone,” but if Katherine seeks longevity, she really needs another understated yet unbelievably strong “Over the Rainbow” performance. Katherine, you should have listened to Simon — you’re talented, but it’s all about the song choice. Grade: C+
