After 65 years of adventures in book form, the little monkey children have grown to love is just as curious in his first film outing. In search of friendship, Curious George’s title character roams the jungle alone until a man in a yellow hat (Will Ferrell) catches the eye of the adorable chimp.
In his yellow safari garb, Ted travels to Africa to find the lost idol of Zagawa so he can save his beloved museum. Without the idol as a new exhibit, the museum will be sold and turned into a parking lot. Although Ted leaves without the idol, he inherits a new friend.
George fails to add adult humor to the children-centric film via the awkward romantic relationship between Ted and the local schoolteacher, Maggie (Drew Barrymore). But other reputable actors, such as Dick Van Dyke, David Cross, Joan Plowright and Eugene Levy, fill the cast of voices with lots of in-references for the older crowd.
Fans of Jack Johnson will enjoy the soundtrack, the entirety of which is written and performed by the talented musician, giving the film lighthearted tunes to match the theme. Adults, however, won’t be curious enough to enjoy Curious George, but the same George who jumped off the page and into the hearts of countless children will enchant and amuse them on the silver screen.
