Lost in the shuffle – overshadowed by all the hype of the men’s and women’s Beanpots, the heroics of Rachael Vanderwal and the men’s basketball team’s attempt to right the ship – sits the success of Boston University’s other teams last weekend.
The women’s and men’s tennis teams, along with the wrestling squad, combined to win four of five matches Saturday and Sunday.
The women’s tennis squad was the most successful of the bunch, going undefeated in its two matches (a 7-0 shutout of the University of New Hampshire and a 5-2 win over Columbia University).
The men’s tennis team failed to lose as well, edging Fairfield University, 4-3, for a big win in its only match of the weekend, while the grapplers went 1-1 on the mat, losing to East Stroudsburg University, 22-15, and blowing out Wagner College, 42-9.
The women’s tennis team led things off on Saturday against UNH at the Track and Tennis Center. And this 7-0 shutout was about as close as the score indicates – not at all. The Terriers won every single match, including all three double sets and all six singles.
Erin Katims and Yana Sadovskaya spearheaded the domination with an 8-3 victory in the No. 2 doubles slot and individual romps of 6-1, 6-4 (Katims) and 6-1, 6-0 (Sadovskaya) in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
Cori Lefkowith, Monica Shepherd and Katie Draganova also pulled off the double duty, with each contributing to a doubles win along with victories in their respective singles outings.
The women picked right up where they left off on Sunday against Columbia. Once again, BU swept the doubles matches, never losing by more than an 8-5 margin. Katims and Gina Sabatino won the first two singles matches for the Terriers, but it was in the No. 3 hole where BU was dealt its first loss of the weekend, when Laura Ahmes lost 6-2 and 6-2.
But the Terriers held strong to win two of the next three matches to preserve the near-perfect two-day stretch and improve to 5-1 on the season.
The men’s tennis team also went undefeated, albeit in only one match. Coach Rocky Jarvis’s squad squeaked by Fairfield, 4-3, Sunday to improve to 4-2 on the year.
BU split the singles portion of the contest, 3-3, winning the first two, losing the next two and then going 1-and-1 in the last pair.
It was the Terriers efforts in the doubles portion that sealed the victory, as BU continued the trend set by the women and swept all three doubles matches.
Barrett Wolf and Jared Kobren had a big weekend for the team, combining to win their doubles pairing, 9-7, and each earning victories in singles action. In the No. 1 spot, Wolf won, 7-6 and 6-2, and Kobren won, 7-5 and 6-4, in the No. 2 spot.
Somewhere in between the women’s and men’s tennis matches, the wrestling team continued its up-and-down season by going, well, up and down. The grapplers lost their first match on Saturday to East Stroudsburg, 22-15, before rebounding to demolish Wagner, 42-9, the next day.
The star on the mat was Mike Roberts, who won both of his matches in the 149-pound weight class. Thomas Sforza was the only other Terrier to not lose. Sforza won at 197-pounds, 4-2, against East Stroudsburg and followed that with a gift-wrapped forfeit win versus Wagner.
The 1-1 weekend left the wresting squad at 5-8 for the season and 3-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Their break-even outings coupled with the three wins from the tennis teams ended the weekend with the three squads winning 80 percent of their games.
Hey, the hockey teams only won 50 percent in the Beanpot.
