Most Boston University students have accepted that when traveling on the Green Line, they will likely wait longer than they would like for a T to come. However, they must have thought it was a cruel joke when – on a day with inclement weather miserable enough to prompt the university to close early and cancel classes for the first time in two years – T service on the B-line was officially suspended for nearly three hours.
At about 1 p.m., students reported seeing stray wires on the ground at the BU West T stop. Shortly after, Green Line service on the B-line tracks between Blandford and Washington streets was suspended as work crews investigated. MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said buses replaced trolley service in the area during that time.
Pesaturo said part of the overhead wire from which Green Line trolley cars get their power fell near the BU West and Pleasant Street stops. While it was initially unclear what caused the wires to come down, Pesaturo later said it was due to the weight of built-up ice. Workers repaired and tested power at both stops. Normal T service resumed at about 4 p.m., and MBTA phased out the bus service at about the same time.
