Presenting the first updates of the semester at Monday’s meeting, constitutional committee chairman Tyler Ramaker said the committee is working on increasing Union membership and clarifying the language of the Union constitution in regards to budget control.
The committee also plans to look into is extending the term length for General Assembly members.
Ramaker said the committe would consider “extending the term for assembly members to three semesters instead of two, so the union has some sort of consistency going into the New Year.”
On a separate subject, substance safety committee chairman Mark DiCristofaro said its recent meeting with the Wellness Task Force was successful.
“The Wellness Task Force really accepted what we were talking about very kindly,” the College of General Studies sophomore said. “Our goal is that the committee will essentially continue on throughout the summer, so it will be an ongoing process.”
DiCristofaro also discussed a similar Massachusetts Institute of Technology committee that recently formed to review the alcohol policy on MIT’s campus. The substance safety committee will meet with MIT’s committee later in the month.
In his executive report, Union President Jon Marker said following Monday’s meeting, the Faculty Council is focusing on the issues of Guest Policy and regulations about releasing personal student information.
“The overriding question is, Does the university see us as adults or children,” he said.
Specifically, Marker said the Faculty Council will work with the current Guest Policy to see where it can make changes.
“They are reviewing the one currently on the books, to see different loopholes that may exist, or if some of these policies are even necessary,” he said.
The recycling committee said it will continue its efforts to encourage more recycling on campus. Specifically, the committee is working with Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore on a sticker campaign project for energy conservation.
The recycling committee is also looking into the distribution of the blue recycling bags in South Campus and Bay State Road residences. According to Union Vice President Jonah Goldberg, while South Campus and Bay State Road were listed to receive blue bags, the bags were not yet distributed because of cost concerns and the lack of a central recycling center.
“They do exist, but they decided not to give them out because Bay State Road and South Campus do not have central recycling areas,” the College of Communication junior said. “Also because recycling will overflow, and they’ll have to schedule more pick ups, which of course costs more money.”
In their committee report, the academic affairs committee said they will be meeting with Provost David Campbell Friday to present two main initiatives.
“Basically the two main things we’re going to bring up are getting course books and syllabi online,” committee co-chairperson Erica Homan said.
Homan said the committee will also bring up the issue of grade deflation with the provost.
“We shouldn’t walk into a class knowing someone’s going to fail,” the CAS junior said. “That’s just not fair.”
The How to Be You committee is compiling information from the BU website directory to be included in the How to Be You pamphlet. The committee is also consulting the College of Communication to discuss its production of a first-year-student guidebook.
The technology committee is continuing their work with Laurie Pohl on the U-portal software, which provides personalized websites for students. Also, technology committee chairman Andrew Golden said the Backdoor BU website should be updated with information by the end of the week.
At the end of the meeting, Marker mentioned the opening of the Family Justice Center, which will work with domestic abuse and domestic violence. According to Marker, the Family Justice Center, which will be located on Commonwealth Avenue between Pleasant and Babcock Streets, works with the Boston Police Department and is looking to for involvement with BU.
Goldberg also announced James Walker, the representative from Sargent College, resigned over the weekend.
