Lily Allen dedicated a lot to the audience at her sold-out Axis show last Sunday. While “Friend of Mine” went to a girl back home who made Allen’s school days miserable, “Not Big” went to girls whose boyfriends are less than well-endowed (“Use your fingers ladies,” she said, laughing and wiggling her pinkie to emphasize her point). Likewise, “Everything’s Just Wonderful” and “Knock ‘Em Out” went to those whose misfortunes paralleled those depicted in Allen’s lyrics.
Songs from Allen’s pop debut appeared on MySpace.com last summer, but her record, Alright, Still, only dropped stateside at the end of January. Her stage performance enhanced her reputation — at heart, Allen’s just a cheeky girl singing pop songs with bite. Live, Allen was able to play with her lyrics and put vocal power into her breezy, urban pop songs.
Allen sashayed onstage in one of her trademark fancy dresses, shrouded in a hoodie, her gold hoop earrings swinging while she sang her single “LDN.” She pulled her hood up to rap “Nan You’re A Window Shopper,” much to the enjoyment of her audience, which hooted at the sight.
Allen said she was sorry to leave our “good country” and return to England. After lamenting her losses at the BRIT Awards, she consoled herself and also
seemed to enjoy herself a little too much, announcing “I don’t normally get this drunk at all my shows, but it’s the last night of our tour.” In true rock star form, Allen sauntered out for her encore with a cup of Jagermeister in one hand and a lit cigarette in the other.
Allen played with her sound effects machine and brought a security guard onstage to dance to her final number, “Alfie.” And while she demanded “stupid dancing” during “Friday Night,” the only song that really got the audience moving was Allen’s massive, crowd-pleasing hit “Smile.”
