Two Boston University dining hall ceilings with recent water leaks will be repaired during the university’s Spring Break recess, according to BU officials.
Dining Services closed sections of the Myles Standish Hall dining hall Jan. 26 after a leaky pipe in the ceiling caused water to fall into the deli and salad bar sections, said Dining Services Operations Director Bruce Perry.
Perry said the plumbing leak came from a pipe connected to upper floors. The Physical Plant has since patched the pipe, and the affected dining hall area reopened the next day, he said.
A Boston snowstorm caused a ceiling leak in Warren Towers dining hall Feb. 15, as water from high winds and ice conditions entered the dining hall’s Melville Lounge section. It was closed until the next day, said BU spokesman Colin Riley.
“The drainage system on the flat roof froze up, and the water built up on that flat roof,” Perry said. “It found its way through the membrane of the roof and caused the leak.” They are now in contact with contractors such as this roofing company in Fort Worth, TX to inspect the damage.
Warren resident Chelsea Rice, a College of Communication freshman who was in the Warren dining hall Feb. 15, said she saw buckets placed underneath sections of the ceiling’s leaks.
Rice said Warren dining hall employees told her she was not allowed to eat in the upper-left section of the dining hall.
“It was leaking and splashing on people who walked by,” she said. “The next day, they closed off the end of the cafeteria over by all the windows, and no one could eat there, because apparently the leak had spread across.”
Warren resident Jessie Levi, a School of Management freshman, said he saw the dining hall’s ceiling tiles were misshapen because of the water. A dining hall employee asked him to move from the affected area and did not explain the cause of the problem to him, he said.
“He was just like, ‘You might want to go,'” Levi said. “He politely suggested that I leave the area as soon as possible.”
