Rilo Kiley may be on Omaha super-label Saddle Creek, but the band was formed in Los Angeles and, good lord, are they Hollywood. Lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jenny Lewis starred as Shelly Long’s daughter in Troop Beverly Hills, as well as having a role in the Fred Savage vehicle The Wizard. Guitarist and backup vocalist Blake Sennet has also dabbled with the Savage family, having been on ‘Boy Meets World’ with Fred’s sibling Ben. He also portrayed Pinsky on the Nickelodeon classic, ‘Salute Your Shorts.’
But when Rilo Kiley hit the stage for a sold-out show at TT The Bear’s on Monday, the band was all about playing polished rock gems, and less about discussing their childhood stardom.
From the first song, the title track from last year’s Execution of All Things, you could tell that this wasn’t going to be your ordinary indie rock show. The audience was passionately singing along with every word Lewis bellowed, engaging in the pogo dance for much of the set. There was even a girl in a cowboy hat!
Actually, the buckaroo wasn’t that far off. Rilo Kiley’s songs are rock, but they have the inescapable feel of some down-home country twang. Fans will balk, but Lewis’s voice sounds like Jewel’s, with more jaded and jilted lover mixed in.
Songs from Execution… far outshined tracks from their debut, Take Offs ‘ Landings. ‘Paint’s Peeling’ worked the crowd into a frenzy, and the drum-machine-giving-way-to-rocking-real-drums trickery of ‘The Good That Won’t Come Out,’ made cowboy hat-girl look like she was riding a bull.
Lewis was the real star of the night, though. Her smudged blue eyeliner and flowing red hair helped draw attention from the loose-fitting shirt that seemed to slide further off her shoulder as the set went on. With stage presence like that, she could make even the Powerglove seem like a good buy.
