Misunderstandings about rape and sexual assault are the main reason we need a rape crisis center at this University. If even our chancellor, the man chosen by the Trustees and himself to rule this school, is misinformed about these tragedies, something needs to be done. When Chancellor Silber placed the blame of rape on people who take their safety for granted (“Rape, rankings top topics in Silber talk, March 6, 2003), he is perpetuating a dangerous stereotype. According to the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center website (www.barcc.org), “The number one reason survivors did not report to police from 1994 to 1996 was because of embarrassment, shame, and the desire to keep the assault a secret.” In addition, “88% of sexual assault survivors knew the perpetrator.” Most people are not being raped because they walked around late at night or took the T. A person is raped because someone else decided to take advantage of him or her. Someone else chose to disrespect his or her body, rights, and safety. Yes, being aware of your surroundings and being responsible can lower your risk of being raped, but rape is never the victim’s fault. Bad choices are not the reason someone is raped. He or she is raped because someone else decided to break the law. Students at BU are known for being apathetic. But they are also known for standing up for what is right and fighting for what they want. We need to correct hurtful misunderstandings and give other students the support they need. Listen to what Chancellor Silber said. React to it in whatever way you want. But please, react.
