While it is a common notion that bands who taste success may forget those who backed them on their way, Bayside is no group to conform to such stereotypical snobbery. In fact, its most significant dedication is to the very people who support them the most: its fans.
“There is nothing better than knowing we’re affecting people’s lives with our music,” guitarist and Boston native Jack O’Shea said in an interview with The Muse. “To have an impact over someone’s life is such an amazing thing for me.”
Bayside blends dynamic rock music with insightful and honest lyrics, creating nonstop energy through songs that are meaningful to both the band and its listeners. Its unique sound draws upon the group’s diverse list of influences, including Nirvana, Frank Zappa and The Smiths. After hearing the band’s latest electric self-titled release, it is not hard to imagine why its following is as immense and die-hard as a cult.
In order to reach out and communicate with their fans, Bayside created a “cult,” through advertising on such websites as Myspace and the aptly named Baysideisacult.com. They now boast over 105,000 friends on Myspace, a number that grows each day.
“Myspace takes a band and a fan and takes away that boundary that separates them,” O’Shea said.
Loyal fans honor them with everything from sold-out shows to more personal gifts such as oil paintings, Bayside tattoos and poetry written on razorblades.
The personal connection with lyrics and the feelings behind them often help listeners through difficult times, O’Shea said. The attitude, however, is wholly reciprocated. Bayside received unshakable support from fans in October 2005 after the tragic loss of drummer John “Beatz” Holohan.
Despite the loss of a friend and band member, O’Shea and vocalist/guitarist Anthony Raneri continued the tour with an acoustic set. The emotional and powerful result is their newest CD/DVD, “Acoustic,” released in February.
“I’m flattered with the response,” says O’Shea. “It is a testament to our musicianship and the emotions behind that tour. We’re not usually an acoustic band … and this CD caters to a crowd that might not normally give us a chance.”
Bayside’s passionate music translates powerfully to fans, teaching them that something truly special can be derived from difficulty, and their outlook, like their future, is bright.
“This is the story of how something beautiful and meaningful came out of something tragic,” explains Bayside’s Myspace profile. “There is always a light at the end of the tunnel … This record is the bright side.”
Bayside will appear at Axis on April 5. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
