When two actors give amazing performances, it can help turn a mediocre script into a brilliant movie. This is certainly the case with Reign Over Me, the story of a man who lost his entire family in the Sept. 11 attacks. This man, Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler), now suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and has repressed all memories from before his loss. Alan Johnson (Don Cheadle), Fineman’s old college roommate, is burdened with marital problems and a failing dental practice. They reconnect in a chance street encounter and both attempt to get their lives back on track.
Sandler is spellbinding and turns in the performance of his dramatic career. He is able to capture the eccentricities and disturbing characteristics of the disorder, all while making Fineman a lovable character. Cheadle is as fantastic as always, and the two have great on-screen chemistry. When the big moment comes, and Fineman finally details his past life to Johnson, it’s one of the most powerful moments you’ll see on the big screen.
