While Boston was celebrating its annual marathon in the aftermath of the nor’easter, the Boston University track team was making waves of its own in Athens, Ga. in the Spec Towns Invitational.
The Terriers, led by nationally ranked junior David Proctor and senior captain Marisa Ryan, built on their success from last weekend’s Duke Invitational. Proctor finished second in the men’s 1500-meter, just .04 seconds behind the University of Georgia’s Ian Burrell. Proctor finished first in the men’s 800m dash, winning with a time of 1:59:02.
Ryan took first in the women’s 5000m with a time of 16: 50.59, beating Georgia’s Kiah Vernon by more than thirty seconds.
BU coach Robyn Johnson said she was particularly proud of sophomore Rebecca Marshburn’s and freshman Casey Jordan’s performances in the 400m hurdles, earning fourth and sixth, place respectively. Freshman Eric Ashe, who took second place in the 3000m steeplechase, also impressed Johnson.
“Eric is doing well. He’s not far from qualifying for regionals and I think he can make that mark,” Johnson said. “I’m looking for [the freshmen and sophomores] to be better. They’re doing a great job.”
While Proctor and Ryan were solidifying their spots among the nation’s elite, junior Andy Beatman built on his breakthrough performance at last week’s Duke Invitational. Beatman’s 51.67-meter throw in the javelin gave the Terriers a third-place finish in the field event.
“Andy still has a lot of potential we are waiting for him to tap into,” Johnson said.
With strong performances from veterans and rookies this past weekend, the Terriers are poised for competition at next week’s UConn Invitational.
“We are going to practice as usual and keep banging it out,” Johnson said.
