Judd Apatow tends to go after major life events: “Freaks and Geeks” tackles the horrors of high school, Undeclared captures college life, The 40-Year-Old Virgin depicts a first sexual experience and now Knocked Up takes a look at illegitimate pregnancy. (Perhaps his next film will be called Holy Orders. Just a thought, Judd. A suggestion. A plea for a job.)
Anyway, Knocked Up is charming and original, although it is not a particularly unique film premise. It has everything that made 40-Year-Old Virgin entertaining and endearing.
The lovable Seth Rogen plays a combination of the least lovable traits from his former roles. Ever the immature, deadpan heckler, here Rogen is also an insensitive loser who impregnates the stunningly beautiful Katherine Heigl. And poor Katherine Heigl. Like any Apatow story, Knocked Up blends painful, brutally true comedy with unexpected adorableness.
The film, once again, reunites the ol’ Apatow alums, including Paul Rudd, Apatow’s lady-love Leslie Mann, Jason Segal, Martin Starr, Jay Baruchel and even too-cool-for-school James Franco. Knocked Up has a lot to live up to after 40-Year-Old Virgin, but it’s everything a Rogen/Apatow fan would want it to be.
