The No. 12 Boston University men’s crew team won its second consecutive Bill Cup on Saturday by finishing the 2000-meter Charles River course in 6:09.1, topping visiting Rutgers University, Dartmouth College, and the College of the Holy Cross. The Terriers won four of five races on the day and earned their second-straight win after defeating Northeastern University the previous week.
BU finished nearly two seconds ahead of runner-up Rutgers (6:11.0) and beat out Holy Cross — competing in its first Bill Cup — which finished in 6:14.70. Dartmouth crossed the finish line nearly 10 seconds after the Terriers (6:18.8).
Before last year, BU hadn’t won the race since 1991.
“It is always good to win,” said BU coach Rodney Pratt. “It builds confidence . . . this one has proved elusive over the years, so it is nice to essentially sweep the regatta two years in a row.”
Racing in calm waters for the first time this spring, BU couldn’t jump out ahead as they expected to in the first 500 to 1000 meters of the race. At the halfway point, the Terriers realized that Dartmouth and Rutgers were making strong pushes and weren’t going to fade away.
“The crews are ready to fight every week, and our opponents are no exception,” Pratt said.
With 500 meters left before the finish, the Terriers made their move, eventually winning by three quarters of a boat length.
Despite a fast start from Holy Cross, the junior varsity team was also victorious. BU finished in 6:16.02, ahead of the Crusaders (6:18.08) and the Big Green (6:39.52). The Terriers pulled ahead in the last 300 meters and won by four seats.
BU’s freshmen dominated the field as well. The first team of eight finished in 6:15.5, well ahead of Holy Cross (6:27.60), Rutgers (6:28.46) and Dartmouth (6.32.68). The second team of eight completed the course in 6:32.71, beating its lone opponent, Holy Cross, by forty seconds (7:12.97).
A week before winning the Bill Cup, No. 13 BU defeated No. 9 Northeastern for its first win of the spring and its first Arlett Cup in seven years. Despite choppy waters and strong headwinds, the Terriers maintained their composure and focus to beat their cross-town rival by 13 seconds. BU finished in 6:43.41, while Northeastern came in at 6:56.06.
Northeastern rowed to nearly a length-long lead 650 meters into the race, but BU pushed hard and made its move at the 1200-meter mark.
“We have certain points in the race at which we make moves,” Pratt said. “A couple of times they were not all as effective as we wanted but we stayed to plan.”
The Terriers picked up their pace and started gaining seats on the Huskies before gaining a length lead. With 500 meters left to go, BU found itself in control.
The race was sealed for BU when one of Northeastern’s rowers put his blade into the water incorrectly, and instead of pulling through, the water caught the blade and the handle smashed back into him, forcing the Huskies to pull up for a second.
“These races are a warmup for our championships in May and June – a chance to improve, and not repeat past mistakes,” Pratt said. “I am pleased with our progress and especially our technical improvements. We need to keep sharpening our skills, both technical and racing, as we progress toward our championships.”
