Playboy Magazine ranked the top 25 party schools in America this week, and Boston University is nowhere to be found.
“I believe we are [a party school],” said Dan Sawasdichan, a College of Arts and Sciences sophomore. “With West Campus, fraternities and all the kids who have apartments, there is a lot of independence. There are so many places, I have somewhere to go all the time.”
University administration, however, was glad to hear BU was not ranked, according to spokesman Colin Riley.
“Students come to BU for serious purposes, primarily all academic reasons,” Riley said. He also deemed students “serious, and focused on their education.”
Riley also said there is more to do on campus than partying.
“We are in the city of Boston; there is a lot of history and culture,” Riley said.
Playboy Associate Editor Allison Prato said that despite popular belief, the rankings are not an annual feature in the magazine.
“Urban legend has it that Playboy does a yearly search for America’s best party schools,” Prato said. “We are thrilled to see how many students from across the country consider Playboy’s party school rankings the ultimate honor.”
Theresa Hennessey, a spokeswoman for Playboy, said the magazine brought back the rankings due to popular demand. Hennessey said Playboy was constantly getting calls from students who thought the party school rankings were released yearly, and they wanted to know if it was true their school was first.
Hennessey said the rankings were determined from a combination of calls, emails, and letters the magazine received from students.
While Playboy did not personally visit any of the campuses ranked this year, Hennessey said the staff researched the schools after the votes were counted.
“Playboy went back and made sure these schools existed, or to see if these events the students talked about occurred,” Hennessey said.
“We determined the [final standings] by student write-in votes. We even received funny voice messages throughout the night,” Hennessey said. “We heard from more than 1,500 students.”
While some of the 1,500 surveyed were from BU, Hennessey said she was unable to confirm how many votes from the university had actually been cast.
BU took the 15th spot in Playboy’s 1987 list of the top 40 party schools. This year, the University of Connecticut was the only school in New England to be ranked, placing eighth between the University of Wisconsin and the University of Kansas.
As for why this year’s rankings only included 25 schools instead of the previous 40, Hennessey said the changes were purely cosmetic.
“I’m not sure why; it sounds better when it’s 25,” Hennessey said. “Rankings always seem to come in top 10 or top 25.”
Regarding the possibility of continuing the rankings next year and beyond, Hennessey said Playboy had not yet weighed in on those options.
“We are not sure; there has not been a definite decision yet,” she said. “We’re waiting to see the reaction from this year’s standings.”
