It is a sad truth that gay white kids from Oakland have been grievously underrepresented in the hip hop community for the past 20 years. However, that may be changing since The Gravy Train!!!! (they’re adamant about the four exclamation points) released their first LP, Hello Doctor, on Kill Rock Stars this summer.
The band consists of four former punk rockers, Hunx, Chunx, Funx and Drunx, who decided to trade in their electric guitars for a drum machine and Casio keyboard and kick it old-school style. The result is more obscene than Peaches, crazier than Wesley Willis and more fun than a barrel of Oxycontins.
The Train’s first single was ‘You Made Me Gay,’ a heartfelt rap dialogue about the breakup between Hunx, the hot and homosexual singer/backup dancer, and Chunx, his voluptuous female bandmate.
The beat is contagious and Hunx’s styles are out of control when he raps, ‘So listen up, Ladies / I like guys and hate babies / If you get me real drunk / I’ll go for the junk in the trunk.’ Another highlight of the album is ‘Sippin’ 40z,’ Chunx’s touching tribute to malt beverages which strangely segues into a tribute to picking up high school boys. Unsettling as it may be, it will have your booty on the flo’.
The Gravy Train!!!! are inspired by sassy female rappers of the 1980s like Lady Tigra and Bunny D, and their live performances are accompanied by Fly Girls-style dance moves. Actually, the dancing gets a little pornographic at times. But what would you expect from a band who writes songs like ‘Kottonmouth BJ’ and ‘Burger Baby’?
Genius that is what you would expect. And the Gravy Train!!!! delivers.
