n I found Anthony Flum’s column interesting only in that it magnified the sadness I feel for those who share his mind-set at Boston University (“Football still not worth it at a school like BU,” Oct. 12, p. 16).
Narrow and self-indulgent attitudes such as his regarding BU football reflect more about low personal expectations and immediate gratification than insight about what’s best for the BU community.
His views regarding the now defunct program and Boston Terriers United for Football were unimaginative and sophomoric. Citing attendance for an alumni game as a reason why BU should not field a team is beyond ridiculous.
While the football program had many issues before ’97, he chose to ignore the long history of the program, the incredible athletes and successful teams that played at Nickerson Field over the years. Given this, I’m guessing he doesn’t see the irony in watching hockey in Agganis Arena.
The students and alumni of BU deserve a successful and popular intercollegiate football team. Of course, this will take time and investment. Hopefully the new administration will recognize this.
After graduation, Flum should not be surprised to be wondering why he does not keep up with his classmates and maintain meaningful ties to the university.
Unfortunately this is commonplace at BU. One thing is for certain — he will not be able to blame the lousy football team. If this comes to pass, perhaps the BTUFF guys will let Flum play in their alumni game next year. If so, he had better hope they didn’t read his piece.
