Leave expectations at the door folks, it’s not what you might think. “The Brady Bunch”: Season Four on DVD isn’t that bad. It’s actually quite enjoyable. Granted, after five hours of Jan’s swinging ponytail, sane viewers will be ready to jump out of their windows before they voluntarily listen to any more of the Brady’s ridiculous repetition of the word “groovy,” but stop somewhere around three-and-a-half hours and the suicide attempts will be avoided.
Moreover, Season Four defies preconceived notions we have about the Bunch. Examples of classic Brady behavior: Greg as the dorky wannabe; Alice as that employee who for some reason thinks that she is family and, of course, Mike and Carol as the freakiest couple behind closed doors (just look at the kind of groping they are willing to do in front of their kids).
Season Four does break down a few of the stereotypes we hold about the Bradys, though. For example, Marcia is genuinely insecure about herself – on a strictly physical basis – but still insecure. Perhaps the biggest shocker of all – Jan is not annoying. If anything, Peter is the neglected middle child who is always complaining, especially when no one wanted to watch him make his volcano.
The DVD set takes the audience back to a simpler time when a look from a parent could get a child to confess whatever they had done wrong and when the whole family unanimously dressed the part for a special occasion. When the Bradys go to Hawaii, for example, their everyday clothes somehow transform into flowered shirts and leis, and then transform back when it’s time to go home again.
With such classic episodes as those involving the taboo tiki necklace and Marcia’s swollen nose, “The Brady Bunch”: Season Four DVD is worth the purchase. While it contains no interesting extras, the hologram on the cover is incredibly entertaining and the episodes provide a trip down memory lane that just might be worth the expense. If nothing else, think of all the amazing quotes a viewer can steal for an away message. A favorite comes when Bobby develops his first crush and Greg “steals” her. Alice tells him to not to worry because there are other fish in the sea. His response: “Yeah I know, but I got Moby Dick for a brother.” m
