Bright Eyes’ new compilation Noise Floor comes as a refreshing reminder that a few record labels have produced what can be called “music” in the last decade. As the cover art’s assortment of wildflowers suggest, the compilation is a mix of elusive gems that Bright Eyes fanatics know well and lo-fi pieces that will grate on the same listeners’ eardrums. The better songs are guiding lights to the many constellations in frontman Conor Oberst’s night sky: “Soon You Will Be Leaving Your Man” for transparent bravado; “Blue Angels Air Show” for summery transience; “I’ve Been Eating (For You)” for ex-lover’s angst; “Spent on Rainy Days” for passionate, desperate pleas. If you’re unsure about Bright Eyes, be wary of this one; if not, here you can dive into his depths. Grade: B
