Luncheon With The Puppeteers

Upon reading yesterday’s staff editorial, “Use Wise Judgment,” I was once again reminded of the utter worthlessness of a group of resumé builders referred to as the “Student Union.”

In the editorial, The Daily Free Press urges the union to use “wise judgment” in its selection of the 25 students “chosen” to attend the Deans Luncheons in March. Hopefully, the Union’s plan is to get some students who are willing to make some racket about issues such as the “Guest Policy” and “minority enrollment.” This, of course, is all in an attempt to make it appear as if “The Real Deal” is actually doing something.

When will the Union and The Daily Free Press admit the fact that the administration could care less about the student body’s needs, yet all the world about their parents’ checking accounts? It would only be fair to the student body for The Daily Free Press to stop printing such useless dribble about the Union that nobody cares about, such as some tool’s resignation speech.

Negotiation with administrators does not work, especially with a puppeteer group calling themselves our “Union,” whose latest accomplishments include distribution of thousands of pins, Project 100 (which brings together the 100 most worthless people at this school) and maybe a student-council bake sale.

The solution: If the student body wants changes at the University on the above issues, they have to make the changes themselves and not put any trust or integrity in this insult to students called a “union.” School-wide walkouts during important test dates, such as finals, are a solution to the issues at hand. Why such an extreme measure? Because the administration will simply not listen to anything else. This has been proven time and time again, as “meetings” with administration members have gone nowhere. It’s also been proven that walkouts do work, throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s — most notably in 1970, when 80 percent of the student body refused to attend class in protest of the removal of a liberal-minded professor in what is now the College of Arts and Sciences. If anything, a school-wide walkout would raise a sense of togetherness and unite the school more than a couple million pins that end up on Commonwealth Avenue in the gutter.

It is up to you, Boston University, not the bake sale organizers. Use wise judgment.
