Demanding Time And Energy

I would like to respond to the Mar. 14 Daily Free Press editorial regarding dual officer positions.

Boston University and the Student Activities Office is committed to ensuring the academic success of those students who choose to serve in leadership positions of registered student organizations. The current policy (explained in group registration materials and in the Programming Handbook) has been in place for many years and prohibits student group officers from serving in dual capacities without prior approval. There are several reasons for the policy.

Many positions, if faithfully served, demand significant amounts of time and energy. The position of Student Union senator, to use your example, requires weekly attendance at the Monday evening Senate meetings that may last in excess of two hours depending upon the agenda. Additionally, each senator represents a constituency such as a residence hall area or a school or college government that also demands appropriate presence at meetings or events. By virtue of the office, senators also serve on committees that, at certain times of the year, may meet weekly to complete projects, plan programs or assist with financial appropriations. The role of student organization president — again, if properly executed — is also a highly demanding position, especially the presidency of a newly registered student group.

The Student Activities Office is also concerned that as many students as possible have the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of student group leadership and that a few student leaders are not allowed to monopolize officer positions and thus diminish the quality of campus life. With regards to organizations such as the Student Union and other groups that receive direct funding, the Student Activities Office must also pay attention to possible conflicts of interest that may affect an officer’s ability to effectively represent a constituency.

Does this mean that dual officer positions are never approved? No. Some are approved each year by the director of the Student Activities Office if in the service of these dual capacities, no harm is done to the individuals, the organizations and campus life.
