• Jennifer Connelly (“A Beautiful Mind”) • Helen Mirren (“Gosford Park”) • Maggie Smith (“Gosford Park”) • Marisa Tomei (“In The Bedfoom”) • Kate Winslet (“Iris”)
Marissa Tomei looks to end rumors once and for all that her win for “My Cousin Vinny” was a mistake. She could do so by taking home a second trophy for her work in “In the Bedroom” — she has a chance, but she’ll face some competition from Jennifer Connelly (previously of “”Labyrinth” fame) as the supportive wife of mathematician John Nash in “A Beautiful Mind.”
Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren, both nominated for “Gosford Park,” will likely cancel each other out, and Kate Winslet faces the same opposition as Jim Broadbent, the “what the heck is ‘Iris’ factor.”
Connelly and Tomei were both excellent in their films, but its likely voters will give it to the “A Beautiful Mind” starlet, not only for holding her own opposite Russell Crowe, but also for handling the character’s aging very well. Tomei could always pull off an upset, but if there were one sure bet for this years Oscars, it would have to be Connelly. But hey, who said anything about there being sure bets this year? And the Supporting Actress category is one that has often been upset.
WILL WIN: Jennifer Connelly SHOULD WIN: Marisa Tomei REALISTIC UPSET: Marisa Tomei
