Abortion coverage biased

Upon reading the article about the pro-choice trip of the Women’s Center, I found The Daily Free Press was very biased in its presentation (“Women’s Center travels to Capital,” Jan. 27, pg. 1). I was in Washington for the Pro-Life March, and I have to say that the pro-life tactics may have been graphic, but it’s the truth, and sometimes people don’t want to hear the truth. In addition, if The Daily Free Press was going to write an article about the people traveling in support of the pro-choice issue, why didn’t they write an article about the flipside of the march, considering that the number of participants in the Pro-Life March is far more noteworthy than those of the pro-choice supporters? Where else can you see almost 200,000 people gathered together peacefully for one purpose in broad daylight, in comparison to only 400 pro-choicers gathered at nighttime?

In addition, a few people need to get their facts straight. First of all, Colden Ray states that pro-lifers are posing a threat, but pro-lifers have no malice in its movement for it to be considered a threat; rather, we are in strong opposition, and we too have the numbers for support. Furthermore, how can Julia Gefter say that she went on the trip because of the issue’s implications for feminists but then proceed to say, “Reproductive rights is the key to true equality between the genders?” Aren’t those two statements just a little paradoxical, considering a feminist’s view is in itself in opposition to a gender-equal society? Finally, another fact that should be straightened out is in the editorial entitled “Oppose threats to abortion,” which mentions that abortions are at its lowest since 1973 (Jan. 27, pg. 6). For your information, in the United States alone, there is anywhere between 1.5 million and 2 million abortions performed yearly — an estimated 4,000 per day — and still on the rise, a number that is well above the 1973 mark.

On a finishing note, the only place that bias should ever come about in a newspaper is in the opinion columns. Being partial to one side in an article, especially with such a controversial issue like abortion, is not true journalism that expresses the whole story; rather, a biased article is nothing more than a biased piece of propaganda. So, for future reference, make sure you report the whole story, not just the popular belief of a minimal group in society.
