URANUS

Every year, The Daily Free Press invites each of the prospective Student Union Executive Board slates to draft an open letter to the Boston University community detailing their beliefs, goals and proposals.

Founded on the principle that ‘URANUS’ should be open to everyone, we feel that our slate is uniquely suited to represent the student body. We seek to work closely with Union senators to make sweeping reforms to the Student Union constitution in order to make it more responsive to student needs and better equipped to push changes through quickly. ‘URANUS’ has tried very hard to run a clean campaign, and we hope to carry that integrity and honesty on to the student government because if anything should be clean, it should be ‘URANUS.’

‘URANUS’ happily welcomes all members and wishes to cultivate a safe and comfortable environment for students. Thus, we wish to add a clause to the BU constitution prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and to reallocate BU’s impressive resources into a campus rape crisis center. We feel that currently the focus of security on campus should not be aimed at inconveniencing students trying to swipe into a dorm but instead focused on protecting students from discrimination and giving victims access to resources to turn to for help and ninjas to turn to for purposes of revenge. Many of you have probably read about the assault that took placed on the stairs near the SCI building. This location has been a problem spot for some time and needs immediate attention.

‘URANUS’ is ready to accommodate student problems of any size. ‘URANUS’ wishes to represent the students and see that their issues are addressed and investigated. We believe that all issues which students feel strongly about are legitimate and deserving of attention. We want to take a serious look at the new ResNet fee to see if it will actually secure better service for the students and compare BU’s new internet plan to those of other schools. It is our opinion that the students’ constantly increasing housing payments should provide better services than they currently do. We want to investigate where our money is being spent and find out exactly why, at a school this well funded and technologically advanced, the network isn’t faster and more reliable.

Furthermore, ‘URANUS’ feels that it is imperative to get into contact with the administration to better understand their views on and goals for grade deflation. We feel that it is unfair for all current BU students to be subjected to unfair grading practices to increase the ranking and prestige of Boston University. We want to work with the administration and find a better solution. If BU wants to revolutionize the grading standard, then it needs to work with other colleges to do the same and better publicize its grading practices so that students are on a level playing field with graduates from other schools.

‘URANUS’ is committed to being a liaison between the students and the administration. We want everyone to feel comfortable contacting ‘URANUS’ to voice their concerns and to be confident that their feedback will be addressed. So for a reliably good time, check out ‘URANUS!’
