Rewind is located in the South End of Boston, an area known and loved for its cultural diversity. This unique shop is located at 1740 Washington St, right by the corner of Massachusetts Avenue. The store, co-owned by Jim Leombruno and Brian Caeser, features vintage, second-hand and new items everything from crushed velvet furniture to a pair of already broken-in Ralph Lauren jeans.
Upon entering the store, you immediately feel transformed into some sort of high-end boutique one that mixes the flavors of an alpine ski lodge with the hip cache of an Urban Outfitters. Music spills from the corner spinning tables that house a large collection of records from Leombruno’s previous endeavors as a DJ. The walls are hunter green, while everything else, such as the handmade clothing racks, is constructed out of pine. New and used books line the shelves that are also covered in fantastic candles and vintage scarves for sale. The whole left- hand side of the back wall is covered in a Brooks Brothers-esque display of blazers for men and women.
The layout and order of the store are impeccable every shelf has perfectly folded items, and every rack has enough room so that you can actually see what’s on display.
It’s a totally different feel from messier, louder vintage stores like the Garment District in Kendall Square or The Closet Upstairs on Newbury St. When you shop for cheap items at Rewind, it’s not just about getting a deal it’s about feeling like you’re treating yourself to something sweet.
Co-owner Leombruno said he wanted to create a store that was ‘functional in design built to appeal to young professionals in the area, that was accessible and still appealing.’ Since the store opened on Sept. 15, 2003, Rewind has already set up a couple of consignments one of which is with Trabejo de Mujers, a group located in the South End that donates handmade cards. Partial proceeds of these cards benefit the South End Community Health Center.
Nothing in the Rewind is priced over $150 dollars: the clothes are priced systematically: shirts for $8, pants are $10, blazers are $15 and suits for $30. Vintage pieces and coats, however, are priced separately.
Rewind is now featuring amazing winter coats everything from basic wool to extravagent-yet-tasteful furs (real and fake). There is a decent selection, with inventory constantly coming in the selection is never skimpy. The women’s collection of coats features many vintage items adorned with big buttons and fur-trimmed collars.
For a relatively small store, Rewind has also put together a surprising collection of men’s winter coats. Everything from wool walking jackets to dress coats are available in a variety of sizes. Rewind is anything but your typical second-hand/vintage shop. So stop, shop and unwind at Rewind.
