Elections cynicism a shame

I was very disappointed to read Jonah Goldberg’s letter to the editor (“Student Union elections a sham,” pg. 6) on the recent Student Union election in Monday’s paper. Cynicism is not helpful to anyone. Mr. Goldberg had nothing positive to say about any of his elected officials and vehemently attacked the two candidates who won by the largest majorities, Sen. Deon Provost and me. I have worked with Sen. Provost all year and I know him to be an intelligent and hardworking advocate for students at BU and I know he’ll do a great job as president. And 54.2 percent of student voters agree with me.

As for me, I am hurt that Mr. Goldberg would make such outrageous claims about my character without knowing very much about me. I’ve worked hard this year as a senator and committee chairman to advocate the best interests of students at Boston University. As for Mr. Goldberg’s bogus claim about my running for a title, I can say only this: Those who know me and have worked with me know that I am simply concerned with the best interests of the students at BU and put that as my top priority. I wouldn’t spend my summer at BU restructuring the Union if I wasn’t, I wouldn’t pour countless hours into the Union if I wasn’t and I wouldn’t have run for any other reason. My job as treasurer is most important to me and I will do my very best to look after the money of the undergraduates at BU. 64.7 percent of student voters acknowledged that.

The most disturbing aspect of Mr. Goldberg’s letter to the editor, however, was his negative attitude toward the newly elected Executive Board without having seen us work. How could he possibly gauge our efficiency and accomplishments without this year having ended? We want next year’s Union to run smoothly, efficiently and to be as beneficial to students as possible. However, we need the support of students to make this happen. I’m afraid that with more cynics like Mr. Goldberg, we will have “another year of being laughed at by outsiders,” as prophesized by the late editorialist.
