One-liners, observations, bad experiences, fabricated anecdotes and yes, “Yo Mamma” jokes–every comedian’s secret weapon–dominated the first round of Boston’s 7th Annual Comedy Festival Sunday night at The Comedy Connection in Faneuil Hall.
The first joke hit the audience before host and fellow comedian Jim Lauletta even thanked the sponsors, and for the next two hours twelve comedians fired their best material for a chance at advancing to the second round. Highlights included an incomprehensible lecture in pig latin, a discussion of the “hotness” of Massachusetts State Troopers, a question about the proper way to hunt a turtle and one man whose entire set was about milk (no joke).
Ironically, it didn’t even take jokes to get the crowd going; just looking at most of the comedians was funny–picture a group of men who probably lived (or still live) in their parents’ basements well into their mid-life crises.
Logan Jacobson and Matt Malley advanced to the next round, with Malley delivering the joke of the night: a description of his job as a lead in the first handicapped, all-male review: Crip-N-Dales.
The competition continues all week, with the finals Saturday at the Majestic Theater.
