New York-based artist Paul Balmer’s latest collection “New Paintings,” is currently on display at the Arden Gallery at 112 Newbury St. In his most recent series of paintings, Balmer chooses to focus on a group of stunning portrayals of urban skylines, specifically New York and Boston.
Balmer etches lines and figures into the layers of oil paint on his canvas to add dimension to his oversized paintings. This technique causes the dark oil layer that Balmer uses under each painting to contrast with the lighter colors primarily used on the top of the canvas.
Balmer’s portrayals of urban skyscrapers are realistic but still clearly his own interpretation of the scenes. His use of color, shadow and technique add to the intrigue of each piece, and the etched figures add both surreal and literal depth.
All of Balmer’s works, featuring an abstract yet coherent style, show his love for cities, skylines and urban life. The current exhibition will be Balmer’s ninth at Arden Gallery, and will run through Oct. 30.
