On his third studio album, Atlantis (Hymns for Disco), Canadian rapper K-os (pronounced chaos) delivers a melting pot of funk, soul, pop and hip-hop proving his skills as a genre contortionist. The disc opens with “Electrik Heat — The Seekwill,” a scratch-heavy rap tune. However, by the second song, “The Rain,” it is clear that K-os is not just another rapper. The lush track is filled with strings, electric guitar and even a subtle piano melody, all while K-os does his best crooning. On the lead single “Sunday Morning,” he delivers an irresistibly catchy hook over a clap-happy beat similar to OutKast’s “Hey Ya.” Other standouts include “Fly Paper,” a fusion of blues and reggae, and “Black Ice — Hymn 4 Disco,” a throwback to the days of disco, infused with a modern twist. With so much versatility, the organic Atlantis evokes as much wonder and emotion as its namesake has for centuries.
