City Crime Logs

The following reports were taken from the Allston-Brighton District 14 crime logs from Feb. 19-26.

At 8 p.m. Feb. 23, police responded to a radio call on Beacon Street and met Boston Fire Department officials on the scene. A fire official said he had seen smoke pouring out of a U-Haul van as he was driving down the street. When he stopped to look, all the windows were closed and a man was locked inside the van, inhaling fumes from a metal tub of burning charcoal in the rear of the van.

The fire chief was able to convince the man to roll down the window so he could talk to him, but the man became verbally abusive when police asked what he was doing. The fire chief flagged down a Boston College police cruiser that was passing by, and enlisted the help of three BC police officers to talk to the man. Officers eventually removed him from the van and physically subdued him. BFD was called to put out the charcoals, and the man was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and for psychological evaluation. Police secured the van and called U-haul to pick it up.

HELP — HE’S FALLEN, AND HE WON’T GET UP

On Feb. 24 shortly after 9 p.m., police responded to a radio call at the Reef Café on Brighton Avenue about an assault and battery in progress. Upon arriving, police observed a suspect being held on the floor by two unknown males. The victim, described as a 30-year-old white male, told police the suspect entered the restaurant intoxicated, began swearing at customers and then fell to the ground. The victim said when he tried to help the suspect stand up, the suspect became combative and slapped him with the back of his hand.

The police observed the suspect was unsteady on his feet and was emitting a strong odor of alcohol. The suspect continued to use profanities and flailed his arms, resisting the officers’ attempts to lift him off the floor. Customers exited the restaurant as the suspect became increasingly loud, physical and vulgar. The suspect, who had a bump on his forehead and a cut above his left eye, was arrested and taken to the station for booking.

NEVER LOOK THEM IN THE EYE

Police responded to a radio call for a loud party at a Boston University fraternity house on Gardner Street Feb. 25 at about 1:30 a.m. When police arrived, they observed occupants looking out the front door, and they then locked it, yelling, “5-0, 5-0.” Police continued to knock on the front door but no one answered.

One police officer went to the rear door and observed about fifteen partygoers leaving the house. As one police officer approached the open rear door, he made eye contact with a 19-year old-male resident, a fraternity member, who closed and locked the door and told partygoers to remain inside and be quiet, though they heard partygoers saying they wanted to leave. One of the house’s residents was overheard saying he had been through the situation before, and said police only arrest people who live at the residence of the party.

Several partygoers were able to unlock the rear door and exit. The fraternity member tried to close the door, but when he made eye contact with the police officer, he tried to blend in with the crowd of exiting partygoers and leave.

When approached by police, the suspect told officers he had left his identification at home.

When exiting partygoers walked by, thanking him for the great party, he admitted he lived at the residence and led police inside as he retrieved his identification.

Once inside, police observed several partially filled liquor bottles, about 150 seemingly underage partygoers, two large tables with red and blue plastic cups, Budweiser cans and posters detailing recipes for various liquor shots.

The suspect was arrested for possession of alcoholic beverage by a person under 21, procuring alcohol for a minor and being a keeper of a disorderly house.

‘CRASHING’ DOWN THE STAIRS

On Feb. 24 at 2:28 a.m., police responded to a radio call for an assault and battery on Chester St, where police spoke with a resident who said a Boston University senior crashed his party. The resident said the suspect had not been invited to the party and made it a point to show up and confront the hosts.

Police watched as the suspect and resident broke out into a heated argument, with the suspect pushing the resident against the refrigerator in apartment’s kitchen. A witness tried to calm the situation and break up the confrontation. The suspect punched the resident, kicked him when he was knocked down and fled down the stairs. Police officers searched the area but didn’t find him, and the incident is expected to be further investigated by D-14 detectives.
