You could not be more off base (‘STAFF EDIT: Lifting the Tali-ban,’ March 29).’ If you look at World War II as an example, the Allies did not let the Nazi Party have a seat at the table after the war was over because they were oppressive and tyrannical. In fact, the Nazi Party was disbanded, and any associated reference or symbol was banned from Germany. To allow the Taliban the opportunity for democratic elections is to undermine the 669 deaths of U.S. servicemen and women who gave their lives for Operation Enduring Freedom. Let’s not forget that the United States went into Afghanistan because the Taliban harbored al Qaeda – you know, those guys who decided to take down the World Trade Center by hijacking planes and flying them into the towers. It is absolutely absurd to suggest that the United States allow the political organization that aided and abetted Osama bin Laden to have a ballot.’ The Taliban may never go away, but appeasement is not the answer.
