Boston University School of Medicine second-year student and alleged ‘Craigslist killer’ Philip Markoff was indicted late Thursday by the Suffolk County Grand Jury on charges of first-degree murder in the April shooting of a 25-year-old New York woman, the Suffolk County district attorney’s office announced Sunday afternoon.
The grand jury returned seven indictments Thursday, formally charging Markoff, 23, with the April 14 killing and attempted robbery of New York masseuse Julissa Brisman at the Boston Marriott Copley Place Hotel and the April 10 armed robbery of Trisha Leffler, 29, at the Westin Copley Place, according to the district attorney’s office. Markoff was also indicted on kidnapping charges and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, according to the district attorney’s office.
Evidence presented to the grand jury linking Markoff to the hotel attacks included witness testimony and internet and telephone records, according to the district attorney’s office. Markoff allegedly contacted the women through the ‘Erotic Services’ section of the online advertising site Craigslist, and arranged meetings with the women using disposable Tracfones, a prepaid cell phone that does not require the user to provide any identifying information, according to the district attorney’s office.
Markoff’s case will now move into Suffolk Superior Court, where Markoff is expected to be arraigned Monday morning. The probable cause hearing set for July 1 in Boston Municipal Court is canceled by Thursday’s indictments.
Markoff is also charged in an arrest warrant with attempting to rob a prostitute April 16 at a Warwick, R.I. hotel.
