In light of Student Union elections next week, The Daily Free Press is publishing stories about each of the three slates running for the 2011-12 school year. Today’s story features members from The Rhett Offensive.

Creating a stronger bond between Boston University students and their on campus government and reaching out to every facet of the BU community are the defining goals of The Rhett Offensive, one of three slates campaigning to become next year’s Student Union, slate members said.

In an email interview with The Daily Free Press, the four members of The Rhett Offensive said their platform focuses on reaching out to students to determine which aspects of BU’s infrastructure warrant change, improvement and progress.

College of Communication junior Ally Rutkosky, The Rhett Offensive’s candidate for Union vice president, said the slate’s platform focuses on changing aspects of the BU community that will have the greatest positive impact on student life.

“Our platform goes from small aspects of the Union like continuing to increase the public relations effort, to big changes with tailgates, BUS stop improvements and increasing the capacity of the GSU,” Rutkosky said.

Rutkosky is currently a member of Union’s public relations team, which coordinates Union events and deals with various campus publications.

Candidate for Union president Patrick Moriarty, a College of Arts and Sciences sophomore, said while The Rhett Offensive will focus on improving specific aspects of student life at BU, the slate is also looking to create a greater sense of community within the student body.

“I want to focus on BU pride,” Moriarty said. “I think following the appearance of the basketball team in the NCAA tournament, Terriers should come together now more than ever to support our athletic teams as a solid student body.”

An international relations major focusing on international economics and business, Moriarty is chair to the Disarmament and International Security Committee for the BU Model United Nations.

School of Management sophomore and The Rhett Offensive’s candidate for Union treasurer Molly Meehan said the four candidates offer a wide variety of experience operating within various student groups and organizations.

“Ally and I bring the perspective of being involved in the Student Union,” Meehan said. “Pat and Nick bring completely fresh ideas as people who are highly involved in the BU community but haven’t held positions in Student Union.”

Meehan said he has served as a West Campus representative to Union, vice president of internal affairs and a member of Union’s Advocacy Committee project.

Rhett Offensive candidate for Union secretary Nick Rango, a CAS junior, served as the cohesive agent for The Rhett Offensive, bringing the four candidates together to form the slate.

“Nick is the mutual connection between us all,” Meehan said. “The four of us met and found that we had common goals for the Student Union, and each of us brought a different background and skill set.”

Meehan said The Rhett Offensive is looking to the BU student body for suggestions concerning improvements that could be made to student life.

“We have plenty of ideas, but we would like to hear from other students about what we can specifically do for them,” Meehan said. “We’re really excited to get feedback about our platform now that we are entering the official campaign period.”
