Song of the week: “Hit ‘Em Up Style” by Carolina Chocolate Drops

By Sydney Moyer, Muse Editor

Old-time string outfit Carolina Chocolate Drops brought their genuine old Southern folk to the stages of Berklee on Saturday night for a nearly sold-out crowd. Comprised of cello, fiddle, banjo, guitar and other assorted instruments, the band’s songs descended upon the room cozily, as if the audience had shown up for a Tennessee lawn party in August instead of a Boston music hall in the snow.

Each song came with an anecdote and several fun facts about its origin, and right before the band played its most famous cover, singer/violinist Rhiannon Giddens explained that years ago, the band used to play middle school auditoriums, and to appeal to that tough-to-please demographic, they started including covers like “Hit ‘Em Up Style” in their set list.

Watch the video below and witness Giddens’ sassily belted tale of revenge over a fierce fiddle and a mean banjo riff.
