Modern Beauty: Hot take edition

Tom Brady’s mouth looks a little gross when you stare at it up close. West is not best. T’s Pub is not the place to meet. Grey’s Anatomy is a mediocre show at best.

The above sentences include some of my hot takes, also known as polarizing opinions, that I’m brave enough to share with readers. Hot takes seem to be especially trendy these days, even though people share unpopular ideas all the time.

After seeing a video that the beautiful women from BuzzFeed’s “Ladylike” produced about hot takes last month, I developed an itch to share some of mine, as well. The beauty industry notoriously fosters methods, products and concepts that I believe to be pointless.

Hopefully, after reading this column, you’ll be able to see the flip side of something you have strong feelings about. And remember, this is just my opinion — not the facts. If you’ve got a bone to pick with me, just go off in the comments. Don’t “at” me. I don’t even use Twitter, anyway.

Hot take No. 1: Face primer doesn’t do anything, and it wastes money that can go toward, I don’t know, something that actually works.

For those who don’t know, face primer is supposed to act as a base for makeup, so it’s usually one of the first steps in a routine. Brands with primer products claim the longevity of makeup improves with the help of the base, but I doubt this is true.

I’ve tried a variety of primer products with high and low-end price tags, and none of them do the job. When I do decide to give primer a shot, my face still ends up as a shiny mess by the end of the day. Just dust the T-zone with powder every few hours and call it a night for results that won’t leave you looking like a disco ball.

Hot take No. 2: Sheet masks make you break out. Boom. Something about the intense jelly substance that coats the masks just rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it’s because every time I put one on, little whiteheads appear around my nose the next morning for no apparent reason.

Perhaps the gross sticky stuff that goes into sheet masks fills in my pores and battles it out with all the natural face oils that belong there, creating microscopic hysteria all over my face. This leads me to look at my broken out face the next morning. I understand this might not be the most scientifically sound explanation, but it’s one that makes sense to me.

Hot take No. 3: Almost every single overpriced beauty product can be easily made with materials found at home or a nearby pharmacy.

High-fashion red carpet looks? That’s nothing a bed sheet can’t accomplish. A Beautyblender? It’s literally just a $20 fuchsia sponge. A day at the spa? Slice cucumbers for eyeball enhancement, whip up a homemade mask and bribe a friend with a steady hand to come over to paint your non-dominant fingernails.

Hot takes make the world a better place. One shouldn’t be afraid to share unpopular opinions. They allow people to explore concepts that weren’t originally on their radar. You probably didn’t think to study Tom Brady’s mouth until just now, right? Why is it a bluish hue? Maybe we would know if more people discussed the matter.

I welcome debate. Let me know your hot takes and any tips that come along with them. We love a well-informed queen, and the only way to be that is to understand both sides of an argument.

Also, one more thing: Kylie should let Jordyn move back in for “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” content and for Instagram stories. There, I said it.
