Terriers have strong showing at Harry Lang invitational

The Boston University men and women’s cross country teams opened their respective seasons this past weekend at the Harry Lang invitational hosted by Colgate University. This is the first of four races that the BU teams will run prior to the Patriot League Championship in November, which take place at the same venue.

The BU women’s cross country team had a strong start to their season, taking home first place at the opening meet of the year.

The Terriers were paced by senior Abigail Gugel who came in first place with a time of 17:11.2 over the 4.8 course. Sophomore Jessica Kellar crossed the finish line in second right behind Gugel with a time of 17:16.5. Gugel’s efforts saw her named Patriot League Female Runner of the Week.

The third Terrier to cross the line was freshman Sophia-Jacobs Townsley with a time of 17:31.7 which was good fifth overall. Her fellow freshman Andrea Claeson clocked a 17:41.1 and junior Corinne Batsu was the final scorer for BU with a 17:51.4.

The BU men’s cross country team finished third in its season opener at Colgate on Saturday.

Senior Paul Luevano was key to the team’s success, with a timing of 19:45:2 ensuring that he finished first amongst the 84 racers. Freshman Foster Malleck had a strong debut, finishing tenth with a time of 20:35.2, just ahead of BU junior Jonathan Fierro who finished 11th with a time of 20:35.3.

Leuvano’s dominant showing saw him named Patriot League Cross Country Runner Of The Week and Malleck was named Patriot League Cross Country Rookie of the Week

The Terriers return to Boston for the annual Coast-to-Coast Battle at Franklin Park on Sept. 20
