Dear Zoey Deutch,
I think you’re great. I loved you in “Set It Up” and while I don’t remember your run on “The Suite Life on Deck,” I’m sure you rocked in it. However, as a loyal fan, I would like to make a request:
Please stop doing accents.
My doubts started in “The Politician.” In this show, you played a fictionalized version of Gypsy Rose, that girl who was Munchausen-by-Proxy’d. Aside from the fact that I’m sick of this narrative, your performance really upset me.
Strictly acting-wise, ignoring the voice for a second, you were good. But that accent, Zoey, I hated it. It made me so deeply uncomfortable and unfortunately I skipped most of your scenes.
At the time, I didn’t let that affect my opinion of you. I chalked it up to a Ryan Murphy demand or historical accuracy — I refuse to watch “The Act” or any other related material, so I’ll never know. I thought I’d give you the benefit of the doubt that it was just a one-time thing.
Then, a few months later, I was on a plane and I decided to watch “Buffaloed.” I thought it looked fun and I like you, so I watched it.
You did this voice. I don’t know what it is. I don’t think you were doing an upstate New York accent — as Judy Greer, in the first time I’ve seen her play a mom. You were doing this hybrid Midwest mixed with Pennsylvania and a touch of Boston accent. But why? Once again, I thought you were great in it, but these accents give me pause.
Now, I’m seeing it’s not a fluke. This accent thing is starting to become your schtick. I watched the trailer for “Zombieland: Double Tap,” where you were doing another voice. This one is better and it makes sense in context, but enough.
I say this because I like you and I think you’re really talented. But please, Zoey, use your own voice. It’s great just the way it is.
