Six products to save your skin this winter

Winter in Boston can be harsh, especially if you’re used to warmer climates. Bundling up is an easy cure for the cold, but fixing the dry skin that comes with winter weather can be more complicated.

The most important thing to remember about winter skincare is the three main categories: hydrate, heal and protect. When applying skincare, it’s important to keep that order of products to ensure they can do their job.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid can be a lifesaver during the winter months if (and only if) it is applied correctly. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it binds to moisture. It needs to be applied on damp skin, or it will draw moisture out, drying it further. Although hyaluronic acid has acid in its name, it does play well with the most active ingredients. If you want to keep it simple, opt for an uncomplicated formulation and apply immediately after washing your face.

Vanicream Moisturizing Cream for sensitive skin.

($13.56/16 fl oz)

This thick face-and-body lotion goes on gloopy but then sinks into the skin beautifully for long-lasting moisturization. The formula is simple, non-comedogenic and fragrance-free — so it won’t irritate sensitive skin. The lack of active ingredients in this product makes it a great option if you plan on layering because there’s a lower chance of ingredients interacting poorly.

Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm

($12.99/15mL)

Although its original purpose is for healing acne spots, this skin-nourishing balm can also help with chapped or windburned skin. Some key ingredients in the Rescue Balm are panthenol, beta glucan and vitamin E, making it an ideal hydrating, soothing formula.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Face Mask

($45.00/100mL)

This overnight mask is perfect if artificial heat is drying out your skin, and you won’t wake up with that tight, dried-out feeling. The mask contains squalane, a moisturizer from sugar cane, and glacial glycoprotein, which comes from (you guessed it) glaciers. It’s on the pricier end, but Kiehl’s is a long-established brand committed to sustainability and science-based skincare. This concentrated product will last you a while.

La Roche Posay Cicaplast Balm B5

($14.99/40mL)

A cult favorite, this French skincare balm is somewhat of a cure-all, intended for everyone, from babies to chemotherapy patients. Its formula is healing and protective, helping to add a barrier between skin and wind. The active ingredient in the Cicaplast Balm B5 is dimethicone, a skin protectant included to prevent water loss. Other ingredients such as glycerin, shea butter and vitamin B5 help soothe and hydrate. This product does leave a white cast, so you should allow it time to soak in when you apply.

Aquaphor

($11.17/7 oz)

Whether in gel, stick, or spray form, this petroleum jelly product locks in moisture and keeps out dry air. The most popular use for it is as a lip balm. It can also be applied on exposed skin as a protective layer — especially on cold and windy days.

As a final note, it’s essential to remember that skincare is highly individualized. What works for some may not work for all. Do what works for you, and most importantly, never forget sunscreen (60-year-old you will be grateful).
