After earning three 2024 preseason All-Patriot League Honors, the Boston University women’s soccer team looks to improve their game and strengthen their identity and leadership skills as the regular season comes into full swing.
“As a group, we’re very confident,” said junior midfielder Giulianna Gianino. “But some of the freshmen who are starting and coming off the bench, and even some underclassmen are still learning that, which is great, but it’s still early on in the season.”
The Terriers are currently standing at three losses and two ties in their season. Amidst these results, BU has put on a notable performance against each team. Senior goalkeeper Celia Braun had an impressive game in the season opener against the Northwestern Wildcats with six saves, but the team ultimately lost 3-2.
“We’re excited to be rolling and getting to gameplay at this point of the season,” said women’s soccer coach Casey Brown. “The team is in a really good spot when we assess the process and the way we’re playing.”
Gianino has been putting the Terriers ahead in net, leading the team in goals scored with three goals this season. Historically, Gianino has been a strong offensive player, racking up seven goals and five assists last season.
Junior midfielder Shayla Brown has also stepped up, playing in the first five games of the season and putting a goal in the back of the net against the University of Vermont.
The Terriers have welcomed eight new freshmen to the team this season with high spirits. Freshman forward Jaiden Schultz has been making noise on the field by starting in the first five games of the season.
“We want to reach our full potential, and we believe that’s winning a championship,” Gianino said.
The Terriers most recently fell to the University of Connecticut on Sept. 1 by a score of 0-2.
The Terriers will face Harvard on Thursday, Sept. 5th at Nickerson Field at 7 p.m.
