Women’s soccer falls on the road to the University of New Hampshire

The Boston University women’s soccer team took another loss Sunday afternoon on the road against the University of New Hampshire.

Junior midfielder Mackenzie Stickleman (4) runs with the ball in a game against Boston Dream on March 24.

While holding their ground throughout the first half, the Terriers (0-5-2) ultimately succumbed to the Wildcats (5-1-1) in the second half.

“It was a challenging road game,” Terrier head coach Casey Brown said. “I think we played pretty well in the first half … I think they really made the most of their free kick opportunities, which was unfortunate, and I thought we were just chasing the game after that.”

Graduate student midfielder Lily Matthews put pressure on the Wildcats’ defense with a shot in the first five minutes of the game. Soon after, sophomore forward Samantha Aronson had another shot on goal for the Terriers.

The Terriers led the first half with three shots, while the Wildcats had just two. However, the Wildcats picked up speed in the second half of the game, as senior forward Megan Guarente kicked the ball past BU’s defense and into the net, making the game 1-0 in favor of the Wildcats.

“Goals change games, and their goal changed the game,” Brown said. “And then they could just sit in that lead, and they definitely had the momentum, so I think we struggled to get it back.”

Senior goalie Celia Braun made four saves to recover from the initial goal, keeping the Terriers from trailing by score. Guarente had a shot at the low center, which Braun kept out of the net.

Sophomore midfielder Kaiya Stewart had two shots on Wildcats goalie junior Sally Rainey, but Stewart struggled to slip the ball into the net. Rainey saved one while the defense blocked the other. Both Stewart and Matthews tied for season-high shots with three each.

“I just thought the game got really transitional and direct, and it’s just not the way we play,” Brown said.

BU is approaching its first Patriot League matchup of the season against Loyola University Maryland Sept. 21 in Baltimore.

Before then, the Terriers will hit the road again to face the University of Rhode Island Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.
