The Boston University women’s hockey team is in the hunt for more hardware, and a certain newcomer is at the heart of that quest.
Freshman forward Sammy Davis, who arrived on campus with extensive international experience, has 11 goals and nine assists to her name through 27 games. Perhaps most impressive of all, the Pembroke native claimed Hockey East Rookie of the Month honors in October, and has twice brought home Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors.
Firmly etched onto head coach Brian Durocher’s third line, the Terriers (16-9-2, 13-4-2 Hockey East) will likely lean heavily upon Davis when the Beanpot Tournament and Hockey East Tournament roll around.
Davis brings a lot more than her talents to Commonwealth Avenue, though, and The Daily Free Press has all you need to know about the freshman sensation.
1. What’s your favorite BU hockey memory so far?
Probably the first game when I got to play at Walter Brown Arena for the first time. I’ve skated here when I was younger and went to camps, but finally putting on the jersey and skating with the team for the first time was a great honor. I know there’s more to come, so I’m excited about the end of the year and what that has to bring.
2. What has the transition from high school hockey to college hockey been like?
I wouldn’t say it’s been easy. I’m still struggling right now and know I have a lot to work on. The older girls and the younger girls have taken me under their wing in teaching me little things after practice and giving me little tips of what to do and what not to do. I know I have three more years here, but it’s been awesome so far transitioning.
3. Who’s the funniest girl on the team and why?
Everybody is pretty funny, but [junior forward] Maddie Elia for sure. She’s always razzing me and stuff, and we sit next to each other in the locker room.
4. Who’s the worst dancer on the team?
[Senior forward] Kayla Tutino. It’s just funny when she tries to Whip and Nae Nae.
5. If you were stuck on an island and could only bring one teammate, who would it be?
I honestly don’t know. Everyone on the team has one thing they bring to the table that’s funny, that I honestly don’t know. I’d want to bring everyone.
6. Who’s your favorite NWHL player?
I really like to watch Brianna Decker — she’s awesome. There’s always Hilary Knight and Meghan Duggan who are pretty cool to watch. I’ve only been to a few games, but it’s been awesome to watch them in the Olympics and doing so much for women’s hockey. They’re really growing the game.
7. What are your thoughts on the team’s warmup mixtape? It seems pretty high-tempo.
There are some girls that are really good at doing the music, and I know halfway through the year, we changed it up. They like to change it up a lot and try new songs, so they’re talking about taking out some older songs for newer ones.
8. If you could have one goal celebration song, what would it be?
Oh, I have no clue. Maybe “$ave Dat Money” or something like that.
9. What’s one thing about Coach Durocher that only the team knows about?
I’m still a freshman, so I haven’t really asked him any questions. Oh, sometimes he’ll get us dessert on away trips.
10. What’s one thing about you that most of your teammates wouldn’t know?
In high school, I really liked working in the marine lab and on the ocean. I did a study in there once.
11. Where’s your favorite place to go in Boston?
I’m from around Boston, so I’ve been to a lot of places. I like going to Boston Common or Quincy Market — it’s really nice there during Christmas time. I like the Seaport area a lot too. My dad and I would go down there. That’s probably one of my favorite places, since I really like the ocean.
12. Where’s your favorite place to study on campus?
It’s weird, all my teammates like to study in the library and places like that, but I kind of like to study in my room. I need a really quiet space. Sometimes I’ll go to the waterfront on the Charles when it’s nice out. I haven’t really found any secret spots.
13. What’s your one guilty pleasure show?
I like “Nashville” a lot. Or maybe “Friday Night Lights”.
14. Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Maybe Carrie Underwood because she’s married to an NHL player. I’ll have to think more about that one.
15. What’s your biggest celebrity crush?
I like Sidney Crosby a lot. Maybe Channing Tatum or Mark Wahlberg. They’re pretty cool.
16. What’s your favorite movie?
I had a feeling you were going to ask me this. I kind of like “The Hunger Games” series. I like action movies too. “Divergent,” “Lone Survivor” and “American Sniper.” I like those movies.
17. If you could have any animal as a pet, what would it be?
I would probably pick a dog because I’ve never had a dog and I love them. I practically live through my friends’ dogs.
18. What’s one emoji you use a lot when texting?
Hold on, let me look up my emojis. I like the one [where] they’re sticking their tongue out and their eyes are sort of squinty.
19. What made you decide on attending BU?
I grew up locally and always wanted to go to school around Boston. I came to a BU hockey camp when I was probably in about fifth grade. I’ve always wanted to go to BU since it was just a big hockey school, and I was really excited to play in a Beanpot. I’m sort of a homebody and really close with my family, so that was a given.
[It’s] just the coaches and community. I really felt comfortable when I came on my official visit with the team. That really sold it, and Coach Durocher is a great guy. He teaches me so much. I’ve learned a lot, and I’m going to grow as a player here.
20. You guys have the potential to make a seventh consecutive NCAA Tournament and win your fifth-straight Hockey East Tournament. What does the team have to do to keep those streaks going?
We’ve had some great games and we’ve had some tough games. The Boston College games we’ve played tough, and we just need to all be positive and realize we’re all working towards the same place. Our goal is to win a Hockey East championship. That’s our main goal and focus, and everyone needs to know we’re working towards that.
We all need to be selfless and not selfish, and once we all are on the same page, that’s when we play our best. We’re not worried about ourselves or who’s going to score. We’re focused on winning and getting the job done.
