Is Justin Timberlake the new prince of pop or R’B? On his latest album, the unfortunately titled FutureSex/LoveSounds, JT ambitiously reaches for both crowns. Drawing from a number of influences ranging from producer Timbaland to Prince (evident in the electro-funkiness of “Sexy Girls”), Timberlake assembles a solid album of danceable pop hits, sure to be blasting from radio and club speakers with the same frequency as the overplayed “SexyBack.” However, even with special guest vocals from his army of famous friends (Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas and Snoop Dogg), Timberlake falls short when he tries to tackle the R’B game. His slow jams are repetitive and annoying, forcing listeners to question whether any given song is ever going to end. Fortunately, the guilty-pleasure pop tracks outnumber the weak ones, leaving new fans intrigued and devotees content. Grade: B
