When Eddie Griffin’s publicist said his schedule was too packed for a Muse interview, an opportunity to talk to the man who embodied the lead role in Undercover Brother — who made it a brilliant parody of blaxploitation films — went by the boards.
However, Griffin’s resume is lengthy and impressive only if one isn’t familiar with the titles listed. Aside from Undercover Brother, which was a modest success, Griffin’s recent films Date Movie and My Baby’s Daddy were flops. My Baby’s Daddy was also Griffin’s screenwriting debut, which is impressive until one sees the “re-write” credit listed on Yahoo! Movies.
In his defense, Griffin had some supporting roles in a few successful films (Deuce Bigalo: Male Gigalo) and a title role in UPN’s television series “Malcolm and Eddie.” His many films in production at the moment include The Year Without a Santa Claus, co-starring John Goodman, and Norbit, co-starring Eddie Murphy. Despite these credits, the Comedy Connection still gives Griffin’s recent Miller Lite ads top billing in a bio publicizing his appearances there Oct. 27th and 28th.
The Comedy Connection, located on the top floor of Faneuil Hall, has been Boston’s major comedy club for more than 25 years. They recruited Griffin for what he clearly does best: his stand-up. He is ranked number 62 on Comedy Central’s 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All Time list, and his concert documentary DysFunktional Family premiered at the Sundance Festival to positive reviews. So you’ll have to forgive Eddie Griffin for being too busy. Most people would be happy to be a success in one field, but he’s trying to make it in all of them.
