If you don’t like the thought of dry, vain and homoerotic jokes combined with commentary on Nietzche from musicians who are recording an album combining the sound of The Eagles with death metal, then you won’t like the Eagles of Death Metal.
But then again, if you don’t like those things then you probably don’t like life. The Eagles of Death Metal, or EODM as they are sometimes abbreviated, is a band formed by Jesse Hughes and Josh Homme. Much like Homme’s last project, Queens of the Stone Age, the band has many contributors and non-permanent members, many of them friends of Hughes and Homme such as Dave Grohl and Jack Black.
The band’s new DVD, called DVD by Sexy, is footage of the EODM recording its second album, Death by Sexy. The musicians themselves have the sense of humor of 13-year-olds and the minds of semi-ironic, overly educated and self-conscious frat boys. They make endless allusions to homosexuality, poop jokes, alcohol and obscure pop culture topics. They describe Death by Sexy as a return to “childish maturity…and flamboyant elegance.”
The film of the band in the studio is interspersed with mini-music videos. Other footage is of made up staged situations of conflict within the band that mainly serves to make fun of how no one knows about Eagles of Death Metal. One of these is a scene where Homme lies to drummer Samantha Maloney and tells her she is auditioning for Queens of the Stone Age. When she gets there and he informs her it is for EODM she says, “Who the @#$% is Eagles of Death Metal?”
The DVD is edited and directed by Liam Lynch (director of the Tenacious D movie), and some of the most surprising and best parts of the DVD come from the great lines that Homme and Hughes spout off, like when Homme says he bent the truth with “a blow torch.” If you like Queens of the Stone Age and Tenacious D, you will become obsessed with Eagle of Death Metal. If not, then, like life, you just won’t get it.
