The Best of Rocky Soundtrack, released in conjunction with the new Rocky Balboa movie, proves to be better than the movie itself, which unfortunately is not saying much. Though the album includes all of the classic Rocky songs that have been mandatory additions to workout play lists for the past decade, the lengthy instrumental scores detract from listener-appeal. James Brown, John Cafferty and Survivor all make contributions to the album with songs that no movie montage could do without. Bill Conti’s string anthems “Adrian” and “Alone in the Ring” are simply boring when separated from the big-screen images of Rocky punching his heart out. Three 6 Mafia and DJ John X also make contributions with the only two songs that are classifiably “new” on the album. Aside from the Arcade Fire-esque choir sounds in the remix of “Gonna Fly Now,” the album is exactly what anything associated with Rocky should be: epic. Did you know: In 2006, Three 6 Mafia became the first hip-hop group to win an Academy Award for Best Song? Could they win again for their song on The Best of Rocky Soundtrack? Only time will tell.
