Combine the lyrics of the artsy, nerdy kid who sits alone at the back of the class with the sounds that come from the head cheerleader’s new VW Bug and you have Ok Go’s debut release. Either way, their CD strangely feels like high school hallways.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Ok Go is making quite a name for itself after touring with current popular and youthful acts — namely the Vines and Phantom Planet. There’s nothing too original about their loud three-chord pop, but their solid album is one you’ll listen to whether you’re angry and angst-ridden, or perhaps just want to dance. Their songs are mainly a mix of pop anthems and shoe-gazing emo tracks, yet pieces of everything else fall in between.
From the first song — also their first single — “Get Over It,” you get the sense that Ok Go is super catchy but also pretty dumb. But that’s fine. What makes Ok Go’s self-titled debut so much fun is that there isn’t an abundance of substance. After all, they do have a song called, “You’re so Damn Hot.” It’s just a straight-up, rockin’ album that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
