Striking a chord against measles, student musical groups from the Boston area came together to raise about $800 to fund vaccinations in some of the world’s poorest countries Friday night at the Boston University Law Auditorium.
About 160 students attended the Music vs. Measles concert, in which Red Cross chapters from BU, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tufts University organized a show together for the first time.
“This is our highest-grossing event as far as I know in the last four years,” said BU Red Cross President Ajay Abichandani.
Abichandani, a College of Arts and Sciences junior, said the proceeds will benefit the Measles Initiative, a Red Cross effort to lower global measles deaths by 90 percent by 2010 by giving vaccinations to children in countries where immunizations are not commonly administered.
Most Americans are not aware that vaccinations are not routine in poor nations, Abichandani said.
“All children in [the U.S.], right off the bat, they’re vaccinated,” he said.
